An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates your website identity and enables an encrypted connection. It is a small investment with significant benefits for any business website.
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. When a browser connects to a site with SSL, the certificate creates a secure, encrypted link between the server and browser. All data passing through this connection is private and cannot be intercepted.
SSL certificates validate your business identity. When you obtain a certificate, the certificate authority verifies that you own the domain. Higher-level certificates require business validation, confirming your organization exists and is legitimate.
SSL builds customer confidence. The padlock icon in the browser address bar signals to visitors that your site is secure. This visual cue is especially important for e-commerce sites and any page where visitors enter personal information.
SSL is mandatory for payment processing. If your website accepts credit card payments, SSL is required for PCI DSS compliance. Payment processors will not authorize transactions on pages without proper SSL encryption.
SSL prevents content injection attacks. Without SSL, attackers can inject malicious code into pages your visitors receive, potentially redirecting them to phishing sites or installing malware. SSL prevents these man-in-the-middle attacks.
Search engines prefer SSL-enabled sites. Google confirmed HTTPS as a ranking signal. While the boost is small compared to content quality and backlinks, all other factors being equal, the HTTPS site will rank higher.
Most hosting providers include free SSL certificates through Let Encrypt. Setup takes minutes and requires no ongoing cost. There is no reason to operate a website without SSL protection.
