Website Backup Best Practices: Never Lose Your Data

February 9, 2026

Why Backups Matter More Than You Think

I once had a client call me in panic. Their website was hacked, all content was corrupted, and they had no backup. Three years of blog posts, product listings, and customer data - gone. The cost of rebuilding from scratch was over ₹2,00,000. A backup would have restored everything in 30 minutes.

The 3-2-1 Backup Rule

The gold standard for backups: keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of storage, with 1 copy off-site. For a WordPress website, this means: your live site plus two backup copies, stored on different platforms (like hosting server and Google Drive), with at least one copy in the cloud.

What to Back Up

A complete WordPress backup includes:

  • Files: WordPress core, themes, plugins, uploads, and configurations
  • Database: All content, settings, user data, and metadata
  • Both are essential. Files without the database give you an empty shell. Database without files gives you content with no way to display it.

Backup Frequency

Daily backups for most business websites. If you publish content daily or process orders, consider real-time backups that capture every change.

Keep at least 30 days of backups so you can restore to any point in the past month.

Backup Storage

Never store backups only on your hosting server. If the server fails or gets hacked, both your live site and backups are lost. Store backups off-site on:

  • Google Drive (15GB free)
  • Dropbox (2GB free)
  • Amazon S3 (pay per storage)
  • FTP to a separate server

WordPress Backup Solutions

UpdraftPlus: Free plugin with scheduled backups and cloud storage integration. Most popular WordPress backup plugin. Configure daily backups and connect to Google Drive.

BlogVault: Premium service with real-time backups, staging environments, and malware scanning. Better for e-commerce sites where data loss is critical.

Hosting Backups: Many hosting providers include daily backups. Verify they work and understand how to restore from them.

Testing Your Backups

A backup that has never been tested is not a reliable backup. Test your backups by restoring them to a staging site quarterly. Verify that all content, images, and functionality are intact. If restoration fails, your backup process needs fixing.

Backup Checklist

  1. Automated daily backups of both files and database
  2. Off-site storage on a separate platform
  3. 30-day backup retention
  4. Quarterly restoration testing
  5. Backup monitoring with failure alerts

The Cost of No Backups

Consider the alternatives: complete site rebuild costs ₹50,000-₹2,00,000. Data recovery (if possible) costs ₹20,000-₹1,00,000. Business downtime during recovery costs even more. A backup solution costs ₹0-₹5,000 per year. The math is obvious.
