Website Accessibility Guide

Why Accessibility Matters Beyond Compliance

Website accessibility is often treated as a legal checkbox. That misses the point entirely. Over one billion people worldwide have some form of disability. Blind users, deaf users, users with motor impairments, users with cognitive differences. These are real people with real purchasing power.

An accessible website serves everyone better. Captions help people in noisy environments. High contrast helps users in bright sunlight. Clear navigation helps everyone find what they need faster. Accessibility improvements benefit all users, not just those with disabilities.

The WCAG Standards Explained Simply

WCAG stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. The current standard is WCAG 2.1. It defines three levels: A, AA, and AAA. Most legal requirements target Level AA compliance.

The four principles of accessibility:

  • Perceivable. Information must be presentable in ways all users can perceive. This includes text alternatives for images and captions for video.
  • Operable. Interface components must be operable by all users. This includes keyboard navigation and sufficient time to interact.
  • Understandable. Information and operation must be understandable. Clear language, predictable navigation, and input assistance.
  • Robust. Content must be robust enough for assistive technologies. Proper HTML structure and ARIA labels.

Quick Accessibility Wins

Add alt text to all images. Every image needs a text description. Screen readers use this to describe images to blind users. Make descriptions meaningful, not just decorative.

Ensure keyboard navigation works. Many users cannot use a mouse. Every interactive element must be accessible via keyboard. Tab through your site and see if you can reach everything.

Check color contrast. Text must have sufficient contrast against its background. Use a contrast checker tool to verify. A minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text is the standard.

Add captions to videos. Captions help deaf users and anyone watching without sound. YouTube offers auto-captions, but manual review is necessary for accuracy.

Our website development services include accessibility audits and implementation to ensure your website meets WCAG standards.

Accessibility Testing Tools

  • axe DevTools. Browser extension that scans pages for accessibility issues.
  • WAVE. Visual accessibility evaluation tool that highlights problems on the page.
  • Google Lighthouse. Includes accessibility audit in its performance report.
  • Screen readers. Test with NVDA (free) or VoiceOver (built into Mac) to experience your site as blind users do.

The Business Case for Accessibility

Accessible websites rank better in search engines because search engines follow similar principles. Accessible websites convert better because they provide clearer paths to conversion. And accessible websites avoid legal risk as accessibility lawsuits increase annually.

Start with an accessibility audit. Fix the critical issues first. Then work through improvements systematically. Every fix makes your website better for everyone.
