Your theme is the foundation of your store's speed. A bloated theme makes every optimization harder. Here is what to look for.
Choose Lightweight Themes
Shopify's free Dawn theme is a great starting point — clean code, fast loading, and regularly updated. Paid themes from Out of the Sandbox and Pixel Union are also well-coded.
Avoid Feature-Bloated Themes
Themes with dozens of built-in features you will never use add unnecessary code. Pick a theme that has what you need and nothing more.
Test Before You Buy
Most paid themes offer demos. Run the demo through PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix. If the demo is slow, your store will be too.
Remove Unused Theme Features
Delete sections, templates, and code you are not using. Many themes include layouts for every page type. Remove the ones you do not need.
Minimize Custom Code
Each custom script, font, and style adds load time. Only add custom code that directly supports your business goals.
Keep Your Theme Updated
Theme updates often include performance improvements and bug fixes. Stay current, but test updates on a duplicate theme before applying.
A fast theme is the best investment you can make in your store's performance.
