The Shopify Plus Question
When your Shopify store starts generating serious revenue, you face a decision: stay on the standard Shopify plan or upgrade to Shopify Plus. The jump from $39/month to $2,000/month is significant. Here is an honest assessment of whether Shopify Plus is worth it for your business.
What Shopify Plus Offers
Advanced checkout. Shopify Plus gives you full control over the checkout experience. Custom fields, upsells, and branded checkout without the limitations of standard Shopify.
Automation with Shopify Flow. Automate complex business processes: inventory management, customer tagging, order routing, and fraud detection. Standard Shopify does not include Flow.
Multi-store management. Manage multiple stores from one dashboard. Perfect for businesses with separate B2C and B2B stores, or international stores with different currencies and languages.
Wholesale channel. Sell B2B directly from your Shopify store. Create custom catalogs, offer net payment terms, and manage wholesale customers alongside retail.
Launchpad. Schedule product drops, sales events, and content changes in advance. Automate the launch process for time-sensitive promotions.
When Shopify Plus Makes Sense
Revenue threshold. The general rule: if your annual revenue exceeds 1Cr, Shopify Plus starts paying for itself. The transaction fee savings alone can offset the monthly cost.
Need for customization. If you need custom checkout experiences, complex automation, or multi-store management, Plus provides tools that standard Shopify cannot match.
International expansion. Running stores in multiple countries with different currencies, languages, and product catalogs is significantly easier on Plus.
B2B and wholesale. If you sell to both consumers and businesses, Plus lets you manage both from one platform with separate pricing and terms.
When Shopify Plus Is Not Worth It
Low revenue. If your store generates under 50L annually, the $2,000/month cost is hard to justify. Standard Shopify provides everything you need at this stage.
Simple operations. If you have one store, one currency, and standard business processes, Plus features will sit unused. You are paying for capabilities you do not need.
Limited technical requirements. If you do not need custom checkout, automation, or multi-store features, standard Shopify is sufficient.
Cost Comparison
Standard Shopify Advanced: $39/month + 0.5% transaction fee = roughly 40K-80K/year for a typical store.
Shopify Plus: $2,000/month + reduced transaction fees = roughly 2L-2.5L/year.
The price difference is significant. But if Plus features help you increase revenue by even 5%, the upgrade pays for itself. For a store doing 1Cr/year, a 5% improvement = 5L in additional revenue.
Features You Get on Plus

- Advanced checkout customization
- Wholesale channel for B2B
- Launchpad for scheduled launches
- Multi-store management
- Lower transaction fees
- Priority support
- Custom reports and analytics
- Script editor for checkout customizations
Making the Decision
Before upgrading, answer these questions:
- Are you hitting limitations on your current Shopify plan?
- Would automation save you significant time each week?
- Do you need multi-store or B2B functionality?
- Is your revenue high enough to justify the cost?
If you answered yes to multiple questions, Shopify Plus is worth serious consideration. If you are unsure, start with the standard plan and upgrade when your business demands it. You can always upgrade later, but there is no benefit to upgrading too early.
