Migration Is Risky If You Do Not Plan
Moving your store to Shopify involves transferring products, customers, orders, and content. The biggest risk is losing your SEO rankings during the transition. This checklist ensures nothing falls through the cracks.
Before Migration: Planning Phase
Audit your current store. Document everything: product count, customer count, order history, content pages, blog posts, custom features, integrations, and third-party services. This inventory guides your migration strategy.
Map your URL structure. Compare your current URL structure with Shopify's. Note every URL that will change. Create a redirect map from old URLs to new URLs. This is critical for SEO preservation.
Back up everything. Full database backup, product images, customer data, order history, content, and theme files. Store backups in multiple locations. You cannot be too careful.
Choose your migration timing. Migrate during your slowest traffic period. Avoid holidays, sales events, or busy seasons. Plan for 2-4 weeks of reduced functionality.
Data Migration Steps
Products. Export all products from your current platform. Clean the data: fix formatting, remove duplicates, and standardize categories. Import into Shopify using CSV or a migration app like Cart2Cart or LitExtension.
Customers. Export customer data including names, emails, addresses, and order history. Import into Shopify. Verify that customer accounts work correctly on the new platform.
Orders. Historical order data is valuable for analytics and customer service. Import past orders if your migration tool supports it. At minimum, maintain a reference copy of all order data.
Content. Export blog posts, pages, and media files. Shopify's blog is different from WordPress development, so content may need reformatting. Images should transfer without issues.
SEO Preservation Strategy
301 redirects. Set up 301 redirects for every URL that changes. This is the most important step for preserving rankings. A missing redirect means a 404 error and lost ranking power.
Maintain meta data. Transfer all title tags, meta descriptions, and alt text to the new platform. Do not leave these fields blank during migration.
Submit new sitemap. After migration, submit your new Shopify sitemap to Google Search Console. Monitor for crawl errors and fix them immediately.
Monitor rankings. Track your keyword rankings for 3-6 months after migration. Some ranking fluctuations are normal. Significant drops indicate issues that need immediate attention.
Testing Phase
Test every product page. Verify images load, descriptions display correctly, prices are accurate, and add-to-cart works.
Test checkout process. Place test orders with different payment methods. Verify order confirmation emails send correctly.
Test on mobile devices. Check your entire store on multiple mobile devices. Mobile experience must be flawless.
Test integrations. Verify all third-party services work: payment gateways, email marketing, analytics, shipping calculators, and inventory management.
Post-Migration Checklist
- Monitor Google Search Console for crawl errors daily for the first two weeks
- Check analytics to ensure tracking codes are working
- Verify all redirects are functioning correctly
- Test customer account logins

Migration is stressful but manageable with proper planning. Follow this checklist methodically and your Shopify store will be up and running without losing your hard-earned SEO rankings or customer data.
