On-Page SEO: What You Can Control

Off-page SEO (backlinks, social signals) is hard to control. On-page SEO is entirely in your hands. Every element on your page can be optimized to help Google understand your content and rank it higher. Here are the best practices that work in 2026.

Title Tag Optimization

Your title tag is the most important on-page SEO element. It tells Google (and users) what your page is about.

Include your primary keyword. Place it near the beginning of the title. Google gives more weight to words at the start.

Keep it under 60 characters. Longer titles get truncated in search results. This reduces click-through rates.

Make it compelling. Numbers, brackets, and power words increase clicks. "15 On-Page SEO Tips [That Actually Work]" outperforms "On-Page SEO Tips."

Add your brand. Include your brand name at the end for recognition. " | iGenli" for example.

Meta Description Optimization

Meta descriptions do not directly affect rankings, but they significantly impact click-through rates. A compelling description can double your clicks from the same ranking position.

Summarize the page. Tell searchers what they will find on your page. Be specific and accurate.

Include a call to action. "Learn more," "Discover how," "Find out." Encourage clicks.

Stay under 160 characters. Longer descriptions get truncated. Keep your message concise and impactful.

Include your keyword. Google bolds matching keywords in search results, making your listing stand out.

Heading Structure

One H1 per page. Your H1 should be your main title and include your primary keyword. Multiple H1 tags confuse search engines about your page's main topic.

Use H2s for main sections. Break your content into logical sections. Each H2 should describe what the section covers.

Use H3s for subsections. Further organize your content. This creates a clear hierarchy that both users and search engines can follow.

Include keywords naturally. Use variations of your primary keyword in headings. Do not force keywords where they sound unnatural.

Content Optimization

Write comprehensive content. Cover your topic thoroughly. Google rewards content that fully answers search queries. Aim for 1,500+ words for competitive keywords.

Use natural language. Write for humans first. Google's natural language processing is sophisticated enough to understand context and meaning.

Include keywords naturally. Use your primary keyword 3-5 times per 1,000 words. Use related keywords and synonyms throughout. Keyword stuffing hurts more than it helps.

Add multimedia. Images, videos, infographics, and tables make your content more engaging. Google tracks user engagement signals.

Image Optimization

Compress images. Large images slow down your page. Use TinyPNG or ShortPixel to compress without losing quality.

Use descriptive file names. "on-page-seo-checklist.jpg" is better than "IMG_4521.jpg."

Add alt text. Describe every image with relevant keywords. This helps with image search and accessibility.

Use WebP format. WebP images are 30% smaller than JPEG with the same quality. Most modern browsers support WebP.

Internal Linking Strategy

Link relevant pages. Connect related content with contextual internal links. "Learn more about keyword research in our detailed guide."

Use descriptive anchor text. The clickable text should describe what the linked page is about. Avoid "click here" or "read more."

Link from high-authority pages. Your homepage and popular pages have the most authority. Link from these to boost the pages you want to rank.

Schema Markup

Schema markup helps search engines understand your content better. Add schema for articles, products, FAQs, and local business information. This can lead to rich snippets in search results, increasing visibility and click-through rates.

On-page SEO is the foundation of your search strategy. Get these basics right, and other SEO efforts become more effective. It is not glamorous work, but it is the work that gets results.
