Plan Before You Act
Document your current URL structure, meta data, and rankings before touching anything. Take screenshots of Google Search Console data. This baseline helps you identify issues after migration.
URL Mapping Is Everything
Create a complete map of old URLs to new Shopify URLs. Every single page. Not just products and categories but blog posts, static pages, and custom URLs. Implement 301 redirects before going live.
Preserve Content
Do not rewrite content during migration. Move existing content first. You can improve it later. Changing URLs and content simultaneously makes it impossible to diagnose ranking changes.
Keep the Same Domain
Moving to a new domain is separate from migrating platforms. If possible, keep your existing domain. Domain changes add another variable that complicates troubleshooting.
Monitor Closely
Check Google Search Console daily for the first two weeks. Watch for crawl errors, index drops, and traffic changes. Fix issues immediately.
Expect a Temporary Dip
Some ranking fluctuation is normal during migration. Google needs to recrawl and reindex your new URLs. This usually resolves within 2-4 weeks. If rankings stay down longer, investigate deeper issues.
