GTmetrix Optimization Tips: Faster Websites, Better Rankings

July 4, 2026

Why GTmetrix Complements PageSpeed Insights

Google PageSpeed Insights tells you what to fix. GTmetrix shows you how to fix it. Together they give you a complete picture.

Performance Score. Similar to PageSpeed but measured from GTmetrix servers. Use for consistent comparison.

Core Web Vitals. LCP, TBT, and CLS. These are the metrics Google uses for ranking.

The Waterfall Chart Is Your Best Friend

The waterfall chart shows every resource your page loads, in order. Look for long bars (slow resources), many requests (too many files), and sequential loading (resources that could load in parallel).

Top Optimization Strategies

  • Image optimization. Convert to WebP. Compress aggressively. Lazy load below-fold images.
  • JavaScript optimization. Remove unused JS. Defer non-critical scripts. Split large bundles.
  • CSS optimization. Extract critical CSS and inline it. Remove unused rules. Minify.
  • Server optimization. Enable Brotli compression. Set proper cache headers. Use HTTP/2.

Understanding TBT

Total Blocking Time measures how long the main thread is blocked by long JavaScript tasks. Break long tasks into smaller chunks to reduce TBT.

Mobile vs Desktop

Test on both. Mobile performance is usually worse. Google uses mobile-first indexing, so mobile performance directly affects rankings.

Making It Actionable

Run a test. Open the waterfall chart. Find the three longest bars. Research how to optimize those specific resources. Re-test. Repeat.
